It's about time
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

Star-Bulletin closing

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin is the oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication in the Islands (the Honolulu Advertiser, once a weekly, is the oldest newspaper in continuous publication). Canadian newspaper owner David Black is negotiating to buy the Star-Bulletin, preventing it from ending its run.

If Black's bid is successful, the Star-Bulletin will move from its present home at 605 Kapiolani Blvd., where it has published since 1963. Stay tuned.

This is the Evening Bulletin Building (this paper, which began
publishing in 1871, was the predecessor of the Star-Bulletin)
on Alakea Street, where it was housed from 1912-1916.

merged with the Evening Bulletin to form the Star-Bulletin.

In 1916, the paper moved to 125 Merchant St. There it published
daily for 47 years, until 1963, when it moved into its current home
at the corner of South Street and Kapiolani.

Here's a view of 125 Merchant St. today, flanked now, as it was
when the Star-Bulletin called it home, by two historic buildings --
the Alexander & Baldwin Building to the left and the Stangenwald
Building at right. A&B Properties purchased the latter building,
which once housed A&B's corporate offices, in 1996.

This photo shows the building's Queen Street entrance today.

This photo shows the same view circa 1963. The manholes remain,
though the buildings have changed.
