Halloween

Be ghoulish, not foolish;
safety is key on this night
of tricks and treats

Masks are the easiest way to transform a child into a ghoul or superhero, but the American Optometric Association warns that masks can limit peripheral vision, which could lead to Halloween injuries.

The organization recommends face painting. Last-minute shoppers can pick up $1.99 kits at Price Busters stores. Follow the picture on the package to recreate vampire, Frankenstein or Star Princess faces.

If a mask must be worn as part of a costume, look through the eyeholes to make sure the child will be able to see.

Other Halloween safety tips:

Bullet Apply reflective tape to costumes for visibility in traffic.

Bullet Remind children to walk on sidewalks or yards, not the street.

Bullet Make sure costumes are short enough to avoid tripping.

Bullet An adult should accompany young trick-or-treaters.

Bullet Children should have a flashlight to light their way after the sun goes down.

For the pets

Frilly tutus and clown rags may try a dog's patience, but a little damaged pride never hurt a pooch. Costume or not, Halloween can be a stressful holiday for pets. Here are a few tips to keep them happy.

Bullet If you do choose to dress up your pet, make sure the costume is safe and comfortable. The costume shouldn't cause the animal to become overheated. Make sure that vision and movement are not obstructed. Beware of binding elastic and dangling objects that are easy to swallow.

Bullet Don't feed candy to pets. Chocolate can be fatal to dogs, cats and birds.

Bullet Make sure your pet has an ID or microchip in case it accidentally slips out the door when trick-or-treaters arrive.

Bullet Consider keeping your pet in another room away from trick-or-treating children. An overly enthusiastic dog could knock down a small goblin.
