If you do choose to dress up your pet, make sure the costume is safe and comfortable. The costume shouldn't cause the animal to become overheated. Make sure that vision and movement are not obstructed. Beware of binding elastic and dangling objects that are easy to swallow.
Don't feed candy to pets. Chocolate can be fatal to dogs, cats and birds.
Make sure your pet has an ID or microchip in case it accidentally slips out the door when trick-or-treaters arrive.
Consider keeping your pet in another room away from trick-or-treating children. An overly enthusiastic dog could knock down a small goblin.
