Flu shot shortage
until end of year

The shortage of flu vaccine here has become even more acute.

Tripler Army Medical Center's supply of vaccine, which was shipped Friday from Philadelphia, has been recalled because of problems in the way it was shipped.

Capt. Richard Jeffries, Tripler's deputy commander for clinical services, said yesterday the main vaccine manufacturer for the defense department has received FDA approval and will be shipping significant amounts shortly.

A spokeswoman for the state Health Department said the Tripler incident is an isolated one and has not happened in any other situations. Manufacturing problems, as well as problems with growing a strain of virus needed for the vaccine, has led to a shortage until the end of the year.

The Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office is offering the vaccine free to veterans. The VA also will dispense free shots to veterans Nov. 2 at Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center in Punaluu and Nov. 15 at the United Methodist Church in Ewa Beach.

Honolulu Police Department Crimestoppers

Early this morning, a truck apparently reversed into
the entrance of Raku Leather on Kamani Street in
Kakaako before the store was burglarized. Leather
handbags, jackets and boots were stolen. Robert
Davis, vice president of Raku International, Inc.,
is pictured calling employees to tell them about
the burglary and to come in to take inventory.

Argument over scooter triggers arrest of boy, 8

An argument between two brothers over a Razor scooter yesterday resulted in the arrest of an 8-year-old boy, police said.

The boy asked his older brother, 10, to borrow the scooter at their Kikowaena Street home at 5 p.m., police said. When the older brother refused, the boy grabbed a large kitchen knife and allegedly threatened him.

The parents called the police, who arrested the boy for first-degree terroristic threatening.

Burglar uses truck to smash into store

Police are looking for a suspect who smashed a pickup truck into a Kakaako leather goods store this morning and stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise.

Raku Vice President Robert Davis estimated the stolen goods to be worth in the "tens of thousands" of dollars. At least two dozen leather jackets were stolen, each valued at $400 to $800.

Davis said it appeared that the burglar reversed the pickup truck into the Raku International Inc. store at 331 Kamani Street at about 5:45 a.m.

The suspect apparently dumped the merchandise into the pickup truck and then drove off.

The truck was later seen on Auahi Street with heavy rear-end damage.
