Bennys the hero
On the streets, on radio shows and in the papers, Hawaii's Benny Agbayani is a hero -- at least to Mets fans and those who want a close "Subway Series." He knocked in the game-winning run last night in the Mets 4-2 victory and had his picture on the front page of all three New York papers this morning.Mike Lupica of the Daily News wrote: "Somebody had to make this a real Series again. So Benny did it. Again.
"Benny Agbayani, from Aiea, Hawaii, is part Hawaiian on his mother's side, part Portuguese, part Irish. His father is part Filipino, Chinese, Spanish. In a Subway Series, he was a perfect New Yorker then, a melting pot all by himself."Andrew Marchand of the Post said, "The Mets are trying to do what Benny Agbayani has done his whole career: They are trying to make their fans believe."
He has hit in every post-season game he has played this season -- 12 games in all.George Vecsey of the New York Times called Agbayani "the new people's choice."Agbayani loves Hawaii but wants to stay in New York until the Mets win the World Series. "I don't want to go back home yet," he said.
