Kapolei 'Taste' hits

The waterslides were closed, yet more than 1,200 people packed the Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park Saturday night. This time it was food, not thrill rides, that made a splash.

The Taste at Kapolei brought more than a dozen Oahu chefs together, offering their signature dishes in an unusual locale. The event, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kapolei, earned more than $20,000 for Leeward Community College and schools in the Leeward Oahu district.

Chef D.K. Kodama of Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar won the People's Choice award for the dish served at his station, a Crispy Jumbo Shrimp Tempura Handroll with Spicy Unagi Glaze.

Rodney Uyehara of Chai's Island Bistro won the No Ka Oi award from a panel of celebrity judges for his Garlic & Pepper-Crusted New York Steak with Mashed Kabocha Pumpkin and Merlot Demiglace.

The judges also gave the award for Most Creative dish to Ceferino Maduli of Baci at the Row for his Pancetta Prawns Escapade with Mango and Balsamic Reduction.

In addition to their trophies, a scholarship in the names of the winning chefs will be given to the Leeward Community College Culinary Arts program.
