Player of Week

Star-Bulletin staff

University of Hawaii junior middle blocker Veronica Lima was named the Player of the Week in Western Athletic Conference women's volleyball yesterday.

Lima had 36 kills and hit .554 with 14 digs and 14 blocks in three Wahine wins last week. Against UTEP, she hit a career-best .714 with a season-high 16 kills.

Meanwhile, the Wahine volleyball team had no change in its poll rankings.

UH remains No. 1 in the Volleyball magazine poll and No. 2 in the AVCA Coaches Top 25.

The Wahine are on the road again this week at TCU Friday and SMU Saturday.

Terminators to nationals

The Terminators, a Hawaii team, will compete in the USA League Tennis 3.5 Senior National Championships in San Diego Thursday through Sunday.

Team members are captain Pat Head, Karen Denison, Karen Hamada, Evelyne Messer, Janet Ogawa, Audrey Yamamoto, Aileen Yoshida, Naomi Hill, Chelyn Shioi and Dee Spock.

Co-Players of Week

Hawaii Pacific outside hitter Flavia Gabinio and BYU-Hawaii blocker Ashley Moeai were named Co-Players of the Week in Pacific West Conference volleyball yesterday.

Gabinio hit .585 and had match-highs of 13 kills in wins last week over Hawaii-Hilo and Chaminade.

The senior had a .867 hitting percentage against the Vulcans, a Sea Warrior best this season.

Moeai had 21 kills and seven blocks in wins over Chaminade and UHH last week. The freshman hit .750 against the Vulcans (12-0-16), third-best in Seasider history.

The NCAA Division II top-ranked Sea Warriors and the No. 7 Seasiders meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight at St. Andrew's Priory Gym. HPU can establish two milestones with a victory against BYU -- a school-record tying 17th win in a row and the 100th career win for coach Tita Ahuna

Wahine golf finishes 12th

The University of Hawaii women's golf team finished 12th out of 15 teams in the San Diego State University Fall Classic last weekend.

UCLA won the event with a 905 score. The Wahine came in at 986.

Freshman Rene Krause led Hawaii with a 240 total, good for 26th place.

UH's Laura DeLucia shot a 245 and tied for 40th place. Melanie Matsumura tied for 46th with a 247.

Megan McGuinness fired a 260 (tied for 71st) and Kristen Scholl carded a 263 (tied for 76th place).

Rocho up a notch

Jessica Rocho has moved into fourth place on the career assists list (2,749) for Central Michigan University women's volleyball.

The senior from Honolulu, a University High School graduate, is in eighth place with 819 career digs after posting a team-high 21 against Akron last Friday.

The Chippewas are 11-10 overall, 6-4 in the Mid-American Conference.

Harvey nets WAC honors

Kim Harvey is the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer Player of the Week.

The freshman midfielder for Southern Methodist scored a hat trick against Nevada and was a key in organizing the Lady Mustangs attack against Hawaii.

Hawaii Wahine goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez was nominated for the honor after setting a single-match WAC record for saves with 18 against SMU.

Lacrosse to Kapiolani Park

The Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational is coming to Kapiolani Park on the weekend of Nov. 4-5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Top players Ryan Powell, the 2000 NCAA MVP , and Casey Powell, the 1999 World Cup MVP and the 1998 NCAA MVP, will play.

The tournament also includes women's lacrosse for what is believed to be the first time in Hawaii.

In the men's division, a Hawaii team will compete against nine teams from Canada, the mainland and Japan.

For more information, call Mark Tarone at 394-0980.

MADD Dash coming up

The 15th Annual Mothers Against Drunk Driving Dash, a 5K fun run/walk, will be held Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. at the Skygate Sculpture Civic Center at King and Alapai Streets.

The fee is $18 for adults and $10 for ages 12-and-under.

MADD Dash registration forms are available at Servco Pacific locations, Tesoro Hawaii stations, Starbucks, 7-11 stores, and at running stores and state libraries.

For more information, call MADD-Hawaii at 532-6232.

Fever winner goes 9-1

The timing couldn't have been better for Ed Schweitzer.

His wife's birthday is coming up and the longtime Kailua resident is planning the annual party, including a weekend at a hotel and dinner with the entire family.

The $500 Schweitzer won in the Star-Bulletin's weekly Football Fever will help with expenses.

"Guess this is my lucky week,'' said Schweitzer, who went 9-1 on his ballot. "I play every week and usually go about 8-2.''

The only wrong guess he made was in picking Denver over Cincinnati.

The top Fever panelist was the Star-Bulletin's Randy Cadiente, who also finished 9-1.

This week's ballot is on C-5.
