Sam Freas, who has coached the University of Hawaii swim team to two consecutive unbeaten seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, indicated over the weekend he might not serve out the last year of his three-year contract. Freas may step down
as UH swimming coachBy Pat Bigold
Star-BulletinFreas said there were "personal reasons" he would not go into that could prompt him to leave the UH program in the near future. He indicated that the university would play a role in how soon he will step down.
Freas said he hopes details are worked out soon. The fact that his son and daughter are UH team captains this season could be a factor in his staying.
Freas has been known as an outspoken coach over the years, a personal trait he admits has earned him some enemies. He expressed outrage last season when eight of his team's qualifying times for the NCAA championships were thrown out.
Freas vigorously defended his timing methods and coaching integrity. The Rainbow men finished 15th out of 37 teams at the NCAA championships held March 23-24 in Minneapolis.
"The job doesn't pay enough for my honor to be stained," said Freas last summer
Freas attributes the NCAA's rejection of his times to "jealousy" about the success of the UH program and to a vendetta waged against him by one NCAA official he would not name.
Freas made no reference to the NCAA dispute in discussing the possibility he will step down.
