Salt Lake man guilty of robbing tourist

A Salt Lake man who admitted he robbed a Japanese tourist to get money for alcohol is scheduled to be sentenced in December for the July robbery.

Clinton Molina, 21, pleaded no contest yesterday to second-degree robbery. He is accused of robbing and hitting visitor Mitsuko Horigome, who was waiting for a taxi with her 8-year-old daughter in front of the Pawaa Fire Station.

Horigome suffered head contusions, cuts and bruises.

Police said Molina punched the visitor and tore off her silver necklace. He continued hitting her while she was on the ground and tried to take her purse. Firefighters hearing her cries for help caught Molina.

The robbery occurred as Molina was awaiting sentencing on three second-degree robbery charges resulting from similar holdups in 1999. He received a 10-year sentence for those previous robberies, and faces another possible 10-year sentence in December.

UH faculty to hold forum on pay lag

The University of Hawaii Professional Assembly is to hold a faculty forum today at the Dole Cannery ballrooms to discuss the payroll lag.

The union believes a lag is unnecessary, whereas Gov. Ben Cayetano believes UHPA should abide by the payroll lag law. Designed to save the state $51 million, the law has state employees receiving delayed paychecks.
