The tears shed by some of the University of Hawaii Wahine were not from joy after last night's Western Athletic Conference soccer match against Texas Christian University. Horned Frogs deny
struggling WahineBy Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe Wahine tried hard to overcome being a player short for the last 56 minutes, 56 seconds at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, but one very timely through ball did them in.
Hawaii needed a win to keep its WAC tournament hopes alive.
The Horned Frogs' 1-0 victory all but dashed those hopes.
It's still possible for UH to qualify for the tournament, but the combination of circumstances necessary makes it close to impossible. And the Wahine would have to defeat No. 14 Southern Methodist Sunday and do it without their top scorer, Arlene Devitt.
Devitt, tracking a ball to the right of the penalty area, received a red card at 33:04 last night for getting her elbow in the face of TCU's Brenda De Rose.
Devitt's loss was critical. Three minutes into the match TCU goalkeeper Shannon Wagner had to make a diving block on Devitt's first shot.
Devitt missed wide left on a shot at 24:12, then took a perfect cross from Megan Lytle at 25:36, but had her shot sail over the cross bar.
"It makes a big difference, particularly against a team like TCU, which tries to possess the ball and push it around midfield," said UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing.
"When you're numbers down against a team like that, you're going to be in trouble.
"I never thought that was a red card violation. It's really unfortunate, the referee deciding the game."
TCU head coach David Rubinson got exactly what he expected from Hawaii early.
"We knew that they would come out very, very hard for the entire time, that they would throw a lot of players forward," Rubinson said.
"It was unfortunate for them to get the red card. They were doing some really good things up to that point."However, despite the player advantage, Rubinson did not change the Horned Frogs formation. He stayed with two strikers, four midfielders and four defenders.
"If they were going to mark us at midfield, we had an opportunity to get the ball behind them in open space," Rubinson said.
The Horned Frogs did just that 1:24 into the second half.
Rebecca Repasky sent a well placed ball past UH defender Erin Schremser to TCU's leading scorer, Sherry Dick.
Dick took control on the run 20 yards inside the halfway line, dribbled twice, then finished with a beautiful shot that angled right to left off the left post into the net.
What remained for the Wahine was trying to score with two or three strikers against anywhere from five to eight TCU defenders.
Wagner dove and pushed Kelly Keohen's attempt over the end line at 57:24 and Camille Kalama's free kick from 22 yards out was just wide left at 74:09.
"They never quit all the time and I'm really proud of them," said Tenzing.
