Air traffic problems
affect few Honolulu
flights, state says

Honolulu Airport was not severely affected by yesterday's repeated breakdowns of the Federal Aviation Administration's Los Angeles Center air traffic control system.

State transportation spokeswoman Marilyn Kali said up to six incoming flights from Los Angeles arrived late in Honolulu.

One midday flight landed 80 minutes late, she said. Two others experienced delays of two hours 15 minutes and three hours 15 minutes, respectively.

Three other late-arriving flights were expected last night, Kali said.

The FAA's Los Angeles Center system is housed in the Mojave Desert community of Palmdale and covers much of California and parts of Nevada and Utah.

Hundreds of flights into and out of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, San Jose, Las Vegas and Salt Lake were grounded when the system broke down twice yesterday morning.

There were no major problems as a backup system was employed for about 100 aircraft in the air, the FAA said.

The FAA lifted its grounding order in stages to allow for an orderly flow of air traffic out of Los Angeles once the system was back in working order.
