Waialua football forfeits
finale vs. Nanakuli

Star-Bulletin staff

The Waialua High School football team has forfeited its season-ending game against Nanakuli scheduled for Saturday, due to a "combination of reasons,'' Bulldogs athletic director Sharon Yoshimura said yesterday.

"It was a combination of injuries and academics,'' Yoshimura said. "For health and safety reasons, we decided it would be best not to play.

"There was no thought about asking our junior varsity players to move up. That team is doing well and we're looking to the future.''

The JV game against Nanakuli will be played as scheduled at 5 p.m.

The Nanakuli varsity is still in contention for a spot in the OIA White playoffs. The Golden Hawks (6-2) need for Campbell to lose to Pearl City and Castle to fall to Kalani to earn the third-place berth.

"It's sad for Nanakuli that they may have played their last game already,'' said Richard Townsend, OIA football coordinator. "Instead of playing on the field, they have to play a waiting game.''

National honor for Chang

Victoria Chang of Punahou has been selected the National Senior High School Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year, the National High School Coaches Association announced yesterday.

Chang won the state cross-country championship as a senior, then earned national recognition with a course-record victory in the Foot Locker National Cross Country Championships.

Jenkins tops in skins

Professional Tom Jenkins won all the skins worth $8,000 in his group yesterday in the Senior PGA Tour Celebrity Skins Challenge at the EMC Kaanapali Classic on Maui.

Jenkins defeated Hubert Green by inches on the 18th hole in a dramatic chip-off.

In the second group, pro Allen Doyle won $5,500 while pro Dana Quigley won $2,500.

In the Gillette putting Challenge, Vaughn Hamai, a store director for Foodland at the Kaahumanu Center, missed a 10-foot putt on the 18th green worth $25,000.

Instead, he received a $3,000 check which went to the Foodland Community Foundation.

Ziegler's team in lead

Senior PGA pro Larry Ziegler led his team to a 22-under par 49 yesterday in the first round of the EMC Kaanapali Classic Pro-Am at Kaanapali, Maui.

Pros Rocky Thompson, Rex Caldwell and Walter Morgan shot low individual scores of 5-under 66.

Volleyball stretch run

The Pearl City girls' team beat Waipahu last night, 15-10, 15-3, to claim the final Oahu Interscholastic Association volleyball tournament berth in the Western Division.

The Nanakuli boys advanced to the postseason with a 15-11, 15-3 win over Campbell.

Mililani secured the last boys' spot in the West despite losing to Waianae, 5-15, 15-8, 16-14.

Kometani stays in hunt

Pam Kometani of Hawaii shot a 2-over 74 yesterday for a 54-hole total of 219 to make the cut for today's last round of the LPGA final qualifying tournament at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Sharing the lead at 211 are Kim Bauer, Sue Ginter and Luciana Bemvenuti.

The low 14 players will receive an exempt status for the 2001 LPGA Tour. The next 35 and ties will get nonexempt status.

Hawaii's Christel Tomori missed the cut with a final-round 82 for a 234 total.

Robb outpoints Garcia

Sunny Garcia, who leads the Association of Surfing Professionals' 2000 World Championship Tour ratings by a wide margin, was beaten by fellow Hawaii pro Kalani Robb in yesterday's first round of the Rio Surf International contest at Barra Da Tajuca, Brazil.

The loss sent Garcia into the second-round elimination heats while Robb advanced to round 3.

Australia's Luke Egan and Jake Paterson, the only surfers who can overtake Garcia in the world title chase, won first-round heats.

So did Shane Dorian of Hawaii but isle surfers Conan Hayes, Shawn Sutton, Ross Williams and Andy Irons were sent into the elimination round.
