Store up for
Halloween safety

Now focus. With Christmas wreaths and lights already for sale in department stores, the average shopper needs to concentrate or be tricked out of Halloween.

Think haunting. Think thrill of danger. Think Safety Systems Hawaii, a warehouse store that normally serves the construction industry, the state and city, keeping them supplied with traffic cones, and, among other things, that police department yellow and black "crime scene" tape.

Although the tape is not available to the public, most of the items in the store are, and it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see that these safety items can take a detour into the danger zone of your Halloween hauntings.

Yellow tape printed with the word "Caution" or without words retails for $8.30 for an 18-yard roll and can give the same eerie "crime scene" effect for Halloween decorating.

Street-type signs to enhance a trickster's den include "Open Trench," "Do Not Enter" and "Keep Out."

For Halloween safety, there are kid-size night-vision goggles (from $6) and fluorescent mesh vests in orange and lime green (from $10.50). Omni-glow lights cost $1.60 with light time ranging from 5 minutes to 12 hours.

Traffic cones can be used to mark driveways or routes to a house that otherwise may be hard for party-goers to find. Taller cones with "Slow. Children Playing" ($32) can be put out year-round when children play street games.

Sales clerk Joselyn Entendencia said traffic cones are popular with soccer teams. "People tell us stories about why they need the items; who knows what they do with it once it's out of the store."

But forget about using them to hold parking stalls during holidays. Tattlers will have police checking for permits required for cones in public stalls.

The store is open 24/7 to be ready for emergencies or to satisfy any midnight needs for cones or glow lights.

Safety Systems Hawaii is at 815C Waikamilo Road , call 847-4017.
