Busy Baraquio
retains poise

ANYONE who can hold her own against David Letterman is a pretty well established debater. Add Hawaii's own Miss America, Angela Perez Baraquio to that short list. She demonstrated an ease with theMug shot linguistically assured talk show host that was remarkable, coming as it did at the end of a long day of personal appearances. She even ran down the list of them all, leaving Letterman to lament, "Gee, that really makes me feel special." "But this is the best," said the island beauty, who went on to dance a hula (in heels) on the show ... Some people recognized Angela's beauty and grace before the Miss America folks -- Alan Houghton comes to mind. The former glamour photog now concentrates on art photography. Years ago he saw Angela do a hula, ultimately getting her to grace two of his "Heartbeat of Hawaii" calendars. She's June in the '98 calendar and September in '99, and appears on his Island Heritage Art Collection cards. Houghton's next find may be Te Hani Gonzado, who he saw hula at Honolulu Airport. He posed her for the 2001 calendar, and before its release, she became Miss Aloha Hula 2000 at the Merrie Monarch Fest ...

DESPITE Wall Street Journal reporter John Fund canceling at the last minute, those attending a Hawaii print media event at the Coral Ballroom had a good time. Hagadone Printing used the Sydney Olympics as a theme with people bouncing on a trampoline and trying to snare a balloon. Prizes were stuffed Outback animals: kangaroos, koalas, wallabies. Hagadone president Erwin Hudelist played Crocodile Dundee, greeting folks with, "G'dye, mate." Trouble is, he's not Australian -- he's Austrian, with an accent to match. Next year he'll have an Oktoberfest theme ...

Merrie Antoinette

THEY didn't name Antoinette Boilard vice president of Alert Holdings Group because she's not alert. She heard about this deal that was too good to be true from a travel agency. She could take her husband and two kids to Disneyland for just $174, round trip from Hawaii. After she sent the money in, it was discovered that the deal was a computer error, and was, in fact, too good to be true. But the agency said it would honor all paid tickets, so next month Boilard, hubby and kids are heading for Paris. Oh, didn't I mention that the deal was from Hawaii to Disneyland just outside Paris? Well, it is ...

RECORD mavens will want to take part in Hawaii Public Television's one of a kind record auction Saturday at 10 a.m. at the station parking lot, 2350 Dole Street. Musicologist Charlie Garrett calls this massive collection, a gift from a public television fan, one of the finest and most eclectic collections he's ever seen, estimated to be worth half a million dollars. It ranges from pristine early Hawaiian recordings -- some on red vinyl -- to every jazz great imaginable, 78 rpm early radio shows and even Elvis and the Beatles. All proceeds go to Hawaii Public Television ...

Village People

BACK from the Big Apple is Coldwell Banker marketing director Melissa Chang. Her one claim to fame from this trip: She stayed with a girlfriend in Greenwich Village in the same building where Monica Lewinsky lives! Melissa was on the lookout for the world's most famous intern, but never spotted her, though the friend said she'd often seen her in the elevator. Monica often was on her way to Crunch, the neighborhood gym where she works out as part of her Weight Watchers deal ...
