Ah New led the Kamehameha Blue junior varsity team to second place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu last season. In 1999, they won the ILH JV championship under Ah New.
"I've been around here for awhile so I'm familiar with most of the players," Ah New said.
Ah New is a graduate of St. Louis School, where he played varsity soccer from 1973 to '75. He played semi-pro soccer with Vaiete S.C. from 1975 to '80.
Other new varsity boys' head coaches include Paul Fu (Pac-Five), Scott Keopuhiwa (Pearl City) and Herb Schreiner (Kaiser).
Keopuhiwa is a former assistant at Moanalua, Pearl City, Punahou and Kamehameha.
Schreiner, the Pac-Five coach before Fu, returns to his alma mater; he was a member of the first Kaiser boys team and is a 1976 Kaiser graduate.
Four qualify at Kaanapali
Four pro golfers made it into this weekend's EMC Kaanapali Classic in a qualifying round yesterday at the Kaanapali North Course on Maui.Ken Corliss was yesterday's medalist with a 2-under par 69.
The other qualifiers were Bob Wynn and Rex Caldwell and former Kaanapali golf instructor Ron Parsons.
The EMC Kaanapali Classic starts Friday. The full field includes top PGA Senior Tour golfers Bruce Fleisher, Hale Irwin, Bob Charles, Jay Sigel, Jim Colbert, George Archer and Orville Moody.
Smith runner of week
The University of Hawaii's Cheryl Smith has been selected Western Athletic Conference female runner of the week.Smith finished first in the 5K Cal Poly Invitational Saturday with a time of 17 minutes, 35 seconds.
It was the fourth consecutive victory for the junior from Kirkwood, N.Y.
