Texas El-Paso
thwarts UH Wahine

EL PASO, Texas -- After scoring seven goals in their last two home matches, the University of Hawaii women's soccer team managed just seven shots last night.

None hit net.

The University of Texas-El Paso Miners rode Stacy Bekkering's goal to a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference victory that dropped UH to seventh place in the standings.

The Wahine knew the condition of Charlie Davis Park after practicing there Thursday. UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing decided a change in strategy was necessary.

"We tried to play direct balls behind the defense, but we were not very successful in the first half," Tenzing said.

"We had problems because of the tilt of the field. There were a lot of soft patches of just earth. If you were not dead accurate with your passes you gave the ball away."

Hawaii, with just two first-half shots, switched back to its regular style in the second half.

"We did much better," Tenzing said. "Arlene (Devitt) did well to get open on three occasions, but couldn't score."

The Wahine unloaded five second-half shots, but UTEP goalkeeper Katie Gilmore was required to make just one save.

The Miners' goal came at 50:13.

Defender Lindsey Raby sent a pass to Bekkering who brought the ball down the right flank.

"We had two defenders on her, but she missed a kick and it stupefied the defenders," Tenzing said.

"They kind of froze with the ball right there. She (Bekkering) hit it the second time and scored."

It would have been a great day for the Wahine to claim their first road victory of the season. Two teams ahead of them in the WAC standings when the day began -- San Jose State and Fresno State -- both lost.

"We'll have to do it in Tulsa now," Tenzing said.

UH plays the Golden Hurricane tomorrow.
