Pleasant Hawaiian
offers low-cost
N.Y. deal

New Yorkers are being offered low-price Hawaii vacation packages for December, as little as $439 to cover not only the round-trip air fare to Honolulu from John F. Kennedy Airport but six nights in a Waikiki hotel as well.

Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays announced the deal as a promotion for its new New York-Honolulu air service.

Calling it a "holiday gift to New Yorkers," Karen Schulz Hughes, Pleasant's vice president of marketing and product development, said the vacation package price is cheaper than the air fare alone offered by other companies.

Pleasant Hawaiian, which brings some 450,000 tourists from the mainland to Hawaii each year, announced in July that it will start its own air service in December from JFK and from Chicago's O'Hare Airport, using aircraft and crews rented from American Trans Air but operating as scheduled flights, not charters.

The aircraft are widebody L-1011 jets, each carrying up to 282 passengers. There will be two flights a day from each airport, a program that Pleasant says could bring as many as 63,000 additional tourists to Hawaii each year.

The New York special applies to only two flights, one leaving JFK Dec. 17 and the other leaving Dec. 19. Participants will stay at Outrigger Hotels & Resorts' the budget-branded Ohana Maile Sky Court or Ohana Hobron.

Westlake Village, Calif.-headquartered Pleasant is also offering packages from Chicago, starting Dec. 22. It is a luxury deal that starts at $1,222, which includes the air fare, a classier hotel, a rental car, steak dinners and other extras.
