Public hearings
set on special ed,
preschools

Parents can tell the state how it's
doing on special ed and
early intervention

State and federal education officials want parents, educators and others to tell them what is working or not working in Hawaii's delivery of special education services and early intervention for preschoolers.

A round of public hearings will begin with a 6 p.m. meeting on Oct. 16 at Kalakaua Middle School.

The hearings will be sponsored by the state departments of Education and Health and hosted by the U.S. Office of Special Education Programs.

The hearings will provide information for the state's assessment of early intervention and special education services and assist in developing those services, according to a release.

Prior registration is requested. Call the Department of Education, 1-(800)-235-2070 or Hawaii Keiki Information Service System, 955-7273 or 1-(800)-235-5477.

Hearings will continue:

Bullet Oct. 17: Waipahu High School, 6 p.m.

Bullet Oct. 18: Kapaa Middle School, Kauai, noon on early intervention; 2 p.m. on special education.

Bullet Oct. 18: Baldwin High School, Maui, 5 p.m.

Bullet Oct. 18: Waiakea High School, Hilo, 5 p.m.

Bullet Oct. 19: Molokai High & Intermediate School, 3:30 p.m.

Bullet Oct. 19: Kealakehe Elementary School, Kona, 5 p.m.
