Star-BulletinHawaii opens the round-robin Hawaiian Regent Classic on Nov. 17 against Northern Arizona. The next two days, UH takes on Pepperdine and Western Kentucky, two NCAA tournament teams from last season.
"Pepperdine won their conference (West Coast) and signed some good kids," Hawaii head coach Vince Goo said. "Western Kentucky is always good. It's going to be a tough opener."
Western Kentucky lost to Duke in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Another NCAA second-round loser, Stephen F. Austin, is in UH's bracket along with Arizona State and UC Irvine in the Asahi Rainbow Wahine Classic on Nov. 24-26.
The Wahine play UC Irvine in the opening round of the eight-team tournament.
The opposite bracket has North Carolina State and Michigan, first-round NCAA losers, Arkansas, a semifinalist in the Women's National Invitation Tournament and Northern Illinois.
The Hawaii Invitational on Dec. 9-10 features WNIT champion Wisconsin, led by tournament MVP Tamara Moore.
The Badgers open with Wright State. The Wahine play Akron. The winners play for the title the second night.
This tournament was changed from round-robin play to bracket play because UH has one less preseason game available with the addition of Nevada to the Western Athletic Conference schedule.
The Ala Moana Hotel Paradise Classic on Dec. 18-20, a three-day, round-robin event, has Detroit Mercy, Houston and Eastern Washington in town.
The Wahine have a Christmas break, then return to practice Dec. 27 to prepare for the WAC.
The first two conference games are at the Stan Sheriff Center against Texas Christian and SMU.
Four of the WAC home games will start at 5 p.m. rather than the usual 7 p.m.
"This is for TV purposes, to try and eliminate conflicts with baseball and to let teams get out that night that want to," Goo said.
There are four conference road trips including back-to-back weekend trips to Texas.
"We tried to move the game at TCU to a Wednesday and stay up there but they couldn't accommodate us," Goo said.
"It's not great scheduling. It would have been nice to stay in Texas, then get San Jose State on the way home."
As it is, UH goes to Texas to play SMU and Rice on a Friday and Sunday, comes home, then returns to play at San Jose State and TCU the following Friday and Sunday.
ABele Chooses UH: Jade Abele, a 6-foot-1 player from Australia, who can play the 3 or 4 spot, has signed a financial aid agreement with UH.
She will sign a letter of intent in November, the same month she graduates from high school.
Abele will enroll at UH for the spring semester 2001 and be eligible for the 2001-02 season.
Ki'i Spencer-Vasconcellos, hampered for two seasons with injuries to both legs, has decided not to play for the Wahine this year.
"I've never been 100 percent and it's no fun playing that way," said Spencer-Vasconcellos.
