The nine-match winless streak is history for the University of Hawaii women's soccer team. Wahine end

nine-match
losing skeinBy Al Chase
Star-BulletinThe Wahine had not tasted victory since Sept. 1 or even held a lead in the ensuing nine matches.
Rebuilding their confidence was a must with five of the next six matches against Western Athletic Conference competition.
"It's about time," said UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing after the Wahine beat Central Washington, 3-1, in a non-conference match at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium last night. "We did not play that well, but goals come at strange times. You've got to have finishers and we had them tonight."
Veronica Flores, Arlene Devitt and Camille Kalama scored for the Wahine.
"We went into the game knowing we needed a win to turn things around," said Erin Schremser.
"The win makes everything else possible in our heads," senior midfielder Megan Lytle said.
Lytle set up Flores' goal 9:45 into the match. She completed a run down the left side with a cross far enough out to flash by the CWU goalkeeper to an unmarked Flores, who directed the ball into the net with the inside of her right foot.
"I know for me, my confidence has been down entering this game," said Lytle. "Confidence was our biggest problem. We have the talent, but when things aren't clicking, you get down on yourself and it's hard to get out of it."
Stacy Wyman converted a penalty kick at 18:07 to tie the score, but the Wahine took the lead for good 10 minutes later courtesy of Devitt's hard work.
Devitt, who missed the last four matches for team rules infractions, stole the ball on the left, dribbled past a defender and cut in toward the goal.
Her waist-high, right-foot shot ricocheted off CWU goalkeeper Emily Barber's hands toward a waiting Flores.
Flores attempted to connect, but barely touched the ball. Devitt, following up, drilled the ball into the upper right-hand corner for a 2-1 UH lead at 28:27.
Kalama scored her second goal of the season at 66:19 when she knocked home a loose ball that emerged from a scramble just outside the goalkeeper's box.
The Wahine made good use of the field early. Lytle, in particular, served a number of balls into the goal area.
"We were able to push it out wide and we haven't done that in so long," said Flores.
"We've been practicing it, but we never did it. Maybe it was because they were pinched in."
The four CWU defenders, in a flat back formation, bunched in the middle much of the match, leaving the sideline areas open.
"We used the flanks well and I was happy about that," said Tenzing. "What I wasn't happy about was they forgot about it."
"Playing everybody was the highlight of the game. Everyone got at least 15 minutes."
Devitt's goal was her fifth, a UH record for a freshman.
When Doreen Fukushima entered the game at 72:32, she became the fifth Wahine goalkeeper of 2000. She had one save.

vs. Nevada Wolfpack
Coaches: Hawaii, Pinsoom Tenzing, 7th season (45-67-8, .408); Nevada, Dang Pibulvech, 17th season (189-105-21, .633).
Season records: Hawaii (3-8-2 overall, 0-1-1 Western Athletic Conference); Nevada (3-8-0 overall, 0-2-0 WAC).
Series record: This is the first meeting between the teams.
Match keys: Neither team can afford another Western Athletic Conference loss and entertain thoughts of qualifying for the postseason tournament, especially the Wolfpack. Nevada's six players from Hawaii will have to stay with the game plan and not get caught up in being back home and playing in front of family and friends... The Wahine have to keep playing the whole field as they did against Central Washington, but more consistently, not in spurts. Hawaii could display better ball control which would cut down on balls given away, especially when trying to create an offense in the middle of the field.
Top players: Hawaii, Arlene Devitt, freshman striker (5 goals, 1 assist); Camille Kalama, senior midfielder/defender who quarterbacks the defense (2 goals), and Demarre Sanchez, senior goalkeeper ... Nevada, Kaulawena Rowe, freshman midfielder and leading scorer (5 goals); Leisha Makinano, freshman midfielder (3 goals, 1 assist), and Mariel Chandler, freshman striker (2 goals).
Interesting facts: The Wolfpack are coming off a 3-1 victory over Portland State, a match in which all three Nevada goals were scored by players from Hawaii. Kaulawena Rowe (Kamehameha), Moani Lau (Kamehameha) and Leisha Makinano (Iolani) put the ball in the net and Lau assisted on the first goal by Rowe. Other Hawaii players on the Wolfpack roster are Morgan Kaya (Punahou), Shanelle Piano (a transfer from Hawaii Pacific) and Marcie Okamura (Iolani).
On the air: None.
Tickets: Admission and parking are free.
