Say it ain’t
so, Ben

I admire and usually agree with Gov. Ben Cayetano. Here's a guy who came out of Kalihi and Farrington and rose to the state's top job. But IMug shot strongly oppose his plan to change Ala Wai Golf Course into a "Central Park West." Ala Wai, an island landmark, draws more players each year than any course in the nation and probably the world. I've gone to Ala Wai after work, got on after standing by, and pulled my cart, playing with school kids as well as geezers. Some of my old school pals, such as Frank Steinmiller, Roy and Howard Kruse, Hank and Allen McKeague and Wally Won, grew up in Kapahulu and caddied at Ala Wai. Some still play there. It's convenient and fees are low. It's something for ordinary, everyday folks. To take it away and force young and old to travel elsewhere would eliminate many players. There is plenty of park space at nearby Kapiolani and Ala Moana parks. If the day comes that Ala Wai is closed and later becomes an overdeveloped tourist Mecca, it would be an outrage, a day of infamy ... I hold two golf tournaments a year, neither at Ala Wai as yet. One is in memory of my wife, Brita, and the other is the Mini-Benny Birthday Tourney for Wobbly Golfers and Worthy Women. The guv played in the Brita Memorial one year and he tied for first with Don Ho. I've invited him to this year's Mini-Benny, which will be held Oct. 26. I hope he plays and stays to chat with us ...

Man in black

At Na Leo's Ilikai party Wednesday, Billy V and Charlie Espina of KCCN FM called up Star-Bulletin reviewer John Berger, who always wears black, and asked him whether he wears boxers, briefs or nothing. John did not say what type he wears but said they were black, adding, "You have to be color coordinated." The evening, with Na Leo singing, will be on KHNL on Tuesday, 7 p.m. No Berger shorts shots, please ...
