Some H-1 lanes, ramps closed tomorrow

Two westbound lanes on the H-1 freeway between Punahou Street overpass and the Pali Highway offramp will be closed tomorrow from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Also, two eastbound H-1 lanes near the Kinau Street offramp will be closed tomorrow, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and the Old Waialae Road on-ramp will close for reconstruction and paving Monday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Man gets lesser term in robbery-shooting

A 19-year-old man who pleaded no contest to charges of first-degree burglary and first-degree robbery in a botched robbery that led to the victim's being shot has been sentenced to concurrent prison terms of five and eight years.

Masaaki Nemoto could have faced 10 years for burglary and 20 for robbery had he not been sentenced under the youth offender statute. He had no prior juvenile or adult convictions.

Deputy Prosecutor Sherri Chun said four masked men, one armed with a shotgun, entered a Pearl City home Feb. 8 believing they would find cable converter boxes. The gun went off, hitting homeowner Robert Wong in the hip. The robbers fled without taking anything.

Bullet Former Kamehameha Schools trustee Richard "Dickie" Wong was indicted by an Oahu grand jury in December 1999 on perjury charges. A separate grand jury indicted Wong for theft, conspiracy and perjury in April 1999, but all three charges were thrown out by Circuit Judge Michael Town. A story Thursday said incorrectly that Town, in dismissing the April indictments, left intact the perjury charges.

Bullet In a story Thursday about student loans, Heidie Abrazado, a Kaala Elementary School teacher, said her monthly pay is $1,200. She says now that her pay is $2,400 a month, with a take-home pay of about $1,300.

Police ID Schofield men killed in Wahiawa crash

The two Schofield Barracks men killed Thursday in a car accident in Wahiawa have been identified as Charkeran Scrivens, 19, and Tyrone Brooks, 27.

Scrivens, of Cheraw, S.C., and Brookins, of Rincon, Ga., were in the 1995 Honda Civic sedan that collided with a GMC pickup truck on Kamananui Road. The men, who were not wearing seat belts, were thrown from the car.

N. Dakota extradites Hilo murder suspect

HILO -- Oliver White, 27, wanted for the 1994 murder of Vernon Souza Jr. of Kauai, was extradited from North Dakota yesterday, police said. He and fellow suspect Jason Santos, 29, will be arraigned Monday.

Big Islanders warned about phone scam

HILO -- Police are warning Big Islanders about scammers claiming to be telephone technicians. The scammers ask people to dial 9-0-#, which allows them to make long distance calls at the victims' expense.

Coroner probes death of Hilo homeless woman

HILO -- Police are conducting a coroner's inquest into the death of Carol Jean Cerreira, 47, a homeless woman found yesterday in bushes near Wailoa State Park, they said.
