Magical week planned

"Magic & Comedy Blast!" on Nov. 5 will close "Hawaii Magic Week 2000," a gathering of the Society of American Magicians.

Headlining the event will be ventriloquist Ronn Lucas, dubbed "the man who can make anything talk." He works regularly in Las Vegas and aboard cruise ships and has held conversations with audience members' wallets, dollar bills, socks, hats and shoes.

Also featured will be the Latin-style illusions of Armando, Curtis Kam from Hale Koa Hotels' "Magic in Paradise" show and Carlos da Silva II, who is also scheduled to appear on Pax TV's "World's Greatest Magicians" show.

The event takes place 6:45 p.m. at the Farrington High School Auditorium. Admission is $15; $10 of the ticket price will benefit the Hawaii Children's Cancer Foundation. Order tickets by phone at 526-4400. For more information, call 836-1800.

HPTV seeks support

This weekend is "Live Pledge" time at Hawaii Public Television. It is the station's first pledge drive since it became a community licensee July 1 and therefore dependent on community support rather than state funds for its operation.

The pledge lineup showcases an array of musical styles. Among the programs scheduled are:

Bullet "My Romance: An Evening with Jim Brickman: 7:10 p.m. today. Pianist Brickman shares the concert stage with Donny Osmond, Olivia Newton-John and Dave Koz.

Bullet "American Dream: Andrea Bocelli's Statue of Liberty Concert," 8:40 p.m. today. Tenor Bocelli's outdoor concert taped at New Jersey's Liberty State Park on July 6.

Bullet "Michael Ball Live at the Royal Albert Hall," 6 p.m. tomorrow. British musical star Ball performs hits from Andrew Lloyd Webber works.

Bullet "The Best of Na Mele II," 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Memorable moments from the second season of "Na Mele."

Bullet "Piano Grand! A Smithsonian Celebration," 9 p.m tomorrow. With Billy Joel, Dave Brubeck, Jerry Lee Lewis, Dianna Krall, Robert Levin, Katia and Marielle Labeque, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and others.

Bullet "Michael Junior," 6 p.m. Sunday. The 13-year-old Junior performs operatic arias and pop numbers in Hanover, Germany.

Bullet "James Last: Gentleman of Music," 7 p.m. Sunday. Last and his orchestra perform dance music.

Bullet "Blast," 8:45 p.m. Sunday. Stage show blends brass and percussion instruments and visual performers in nonstop motion.

Special Olympics effort

Cheer the efforts of seven Special Olympics athletes on "Special Olympic Gold" at 9 p.m. tomorrow on KHNL/NBC. The program follows the athletes through their training season and their competitive events at this summer's Special Olympics Hawaii games.

BOE candidates talk

Candidates for the state Board of Education at-large seats discuss the issues on the fifth program of "Newsmakers: Election Edition" airing at 3 p.m. tomorrow on KHET/PBS.

Ric Blair Band performs

The Ric Blair Band caps a tour of the island this weekend with a free appearance at noon tomorrow on Ala Moana Center's Centerstage.

Blair is a singer/songwriter who has performed Christian, celtic and folk rock music since signing his first deal with Frontline Records in 1985.

He has worked as a session guitarist for Amy Grant, produced scores for HBO and Cinemax and also served as a guitar instructor to Sheryl Crow.

His latest CD, "Break the Walls," combines traditional celtic music and acoustic folk rock, with a mix of ballads and jigs that he says will "take you back to Ireland."

The band will also perform Sunday during 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. services at the First Presbyterian Church of Honolulu (1822 Keeaumoku St., 532-1111) and at 7 p.m. at Waena Elementary School (95-502 Kipapa Drive) for the Hope Chapel in Mililani (625-1077).

Wrecking Crew goes live

The Wrecking Crew will perforom 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Oct. 14 at Indigo restaurant as part of its "Saturday Live" series of performances.

The Wrecking Crew, considered one of Hawaii's most progressive reggae/funk/hip-hop bands, comprises former members of Dread Ashanti and Rockers Rights.

Cover at the door is $5. The show is open to ages 21 and up.

Four acts play Triple Crown

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Nov. 4 extravaganza featuring Suicidal Tendencies, Plus, Lose Money and Unit 101.

The concert takes place at Worlds' Nov. 4, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the all-ages show starting at 7 p.m.

The cost is $16.50 general (plus service charge), and tickets are available at Radio Free Music Center, Tower Records-Kahala and Pearl Kai, Tower Video Kapiolani, Hungry Ear Kailua, Tempo Music, Jelly's-Puck's Alley and Pearl Kai, UH Campus Center, House of Music, ITT Kaneohe MCBH, Pearl Harbor Bloch Arena and Schofield ITR.
