WildcatsWAHINE SOCCER PLAYBOOK
Coaches: Hawaii, Pinsoom Tenzing, 7th season (44-67-8, .403); Central Washington, Michael Ferrand, 1st season (6-3-1, .650).
Season records: Hawaii (2-8-1 overall); Central Washington (6-3-1).
Series record: This is the first meeting between the teams and Central Washington's only match against an NCAA Division I opponent in 2000.
Match keys: The Wahine haven't won in nine matches and the Wildcats are winless in their last three. CW head coach Michael Ferrand says this is another big test for the Wildcats. "Hawaii has some injuries, but they have some very talented players. They are a Division I team that can play. We have a very good scouting report for them, so we should be prepared." ... The Wahine have to be prepared to turn their season around. They have scored just 12 goals in 12 matches despite taking 144 shots with 63 on goal. Only six of those goals have come in the last nine matches. Hawaii has had success shutting down top opposing players, but needs more composure from the midfielders. The Wahine have to learn to play the ball to open space (and a teammate) rather than sending it back into traffic. UH is still in good shape as far as the WAC is concerned, but needs to discover what it's like to win again.
Top players: Hawaii, Arlene Devitt, freshman striker (4 goals); Jennifer Starsiak, junior striker (2 goals, 1 assist), and Demarre Sanchez, senior goalkeeper (1.74 goals allowed per match average) ... Central Washington, Jenny Merkel, junior midfielder (7 goals, 3 assists); Jynell King, senior striker (4 goals, 1 assist); Kim Glusick, sophomore striker (3 goals, 2 assists), and Sarah Windham, freshman midfielder (2 goals, 4 assists).
Interesting facts: The Wahine are 24-27-5 in home matches in seven seasons as an intercollegiate program ... The Wildcats won six of their first seven matches, all by shutout. They are 0-2-1 in their last three matches ... Central Washington plays a Pacific West Conference match against Hawaii Pacific on Sunday at 10 a.m. at Atherton Field on HPU's Windward Campus ... The 6,552 fans who have watched the seven Wahine matches at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium this season are the most ever, topping the count of 6,277 at Ala Wai Field in 1998.
