Ah Mow, Bown to
visit Sheriff Center
for celebration

Former University of Hawaii volleyball All-Americans and Olympians Robyn Ah Mow and Heather Bown return to the Stan Sheriff Center for a post-Olympic celebration after the Wahine's match against SMU Saturday night.

Ah Mow started at setter and Bown at middle blocker for the U.S. women's team, which finished fourth in the Summer Olympics at Sydney, Australia. The Americans lost to Russia in the semifinals and to Brazil in the bronze-medal match.

The two former UH standouts will hold a news conference tomorrow afternoon in the Sheriff Center Green Room.

After Saturday's UH-SMU match, the festivities will include an autograph session. Fans may bring their own items to autograph, with a limit of one item each.

Ho brothers surf on

Hawaii's Derek and Michael Ho moved into the quarterfinals of the Quiksilver Masters surfing contest at Lafitenia, France, with strong showings yesterday.

Tom Carroll of Australia led the masters division advance, winning all four of his heats.

In the last one, against Barton Lynch, Mike Parsons and Hawaii's Hans Hedemann, Carroll scored the highest wave of the event - a 9.9 out of 10.

Lynch also qualified after winning three rounds, and placing second to Carroll in the fourth.

The other quarterfinalists will be Derek Ho, Australia's Gary Elkerton, Glen Winton and Rob Bain, and U.S. surfers Tom Curren and Mike Parsons.

In the grand masters (Over 43) division, Michael Ho was one of six surfers to gain the round of eight.

Hawaii's Buzzy Kerbox and Bobby Owens were among six others vying for the other two spots in a surf-off today.

The competition window runs through Sunday.

Family Stone softball

The 18th annual Family Stone State High School Alumni softball tournament is scheduled for Oct. 19-22 at the Hickam Air Force Base softball complex.

The entry fee is $175 per team.

A meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 10, at Lanakila Park.

UH sailors open season

The University of Hawaii sailing teams began the fall season this past weekend.

The Wahine team finished fourth in the Women's National Invitational at Redwood City, Calif., with 135 points.

Whitney Gilmour and Renee DeCurtis had 86 points in the A Division. Jennifer Warnock and Sarah Hitchcock had the lowest score in B Division with 49 points.

The coed team of Steve Brown, Will Edwards, Charlie Boukather and John Sharkey placed sixth, ninth, 12th and 14th, respectively, in the PCIYRA Men's Singlehanded Championships at Long Beach, Calif.

Stanford won both regattas.

Isle seniors in nationals

First Today, a men's tennis team from Honolulu, will compete in the USA League Tennis 3.0 Senior National Championships in Palm Springs, Calif., Oct. 12-15.

Team members are Bob Watada, Frank Chee, George Chun, Calvin Koseki, Harold Kwan, Stanley Morita, Kazu Samura and George Tom.

Tacos 5K has new course

For the fifth year, the Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held in conjunction with the Maui Marathon, but on a new day and along a new course.

The Maui Tacos 5K will be held on , March 17, 2001 with the new course beginning and ending at Whaler's Village at Kaanapali Resort. The marathon is scheduled for March 18.

Taylor to fight in Hawaii

Meldrick Taylor, a three-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist will be in Hawaii to box against Jerry Smith in the main event of "Halloween Havoc" at the Sheraton Waikiki on Oct. 31.

Hector Camacho Jr., Obed Sullivan, Calvin Green, Cecil McKenzie and Vicky Cozy are among the other boxers on the card, according to organizers.

Polo match Sunday

The Honolulu Polo Club's match tomorrow starts at 2:30 p.m. at the Waimanalo Polo Field.

The gate opens at 1 p.m.. General admission is $3 with children under 12 free. For more information, call 396-0494.

Wahiawa LL meeting

The Wahiawa Little League will hold a general meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Hale Koa facility at Wahiawa District Park.

Parents and interested persons are encouraged to attend for the planning of the 2000-2001 season.
