HSA’s Fouts working
‘for good of game’

DONNA Fouts has established some goals for the Hawaii Soccer Association five weeks into her term as president of the organization that oversees the adult leagues statewide.

She wants to follow up on the strides past president Dave Jorgensen made in getting the organization's rules and by-laws cleaned up.

"I think a lot of the leagues have gotten lax as far as procedure, like not registering players on time," Fouts said.

"I want to continue the organizational fine tuning. We have been a mom and pop store for so long. Now we're the shopping mall. I want to get everyone to follow the same rules."

The Men's Island Soccer Organization, the Women's Island Soccer Association, the Ranger League and the Coed League operate on Oahu.

Kauai has the Kauai Adult Coed League and the Garden Isle Soccer League. There is the Big Island Soccer League.

The Maui Men's Soccer League, the Valley Isle Soccer Association for Women and the Valley Isle Coed Soccer League operate on Maui.

The HSA oversees the legalities, making sure all the teams are in compliance with United States Soccer Federation rules.

Players pay a $12 registration fee to HSA, but $10.75 goes to USSF. The biggest benefit is USSF's nationwide insurance coverage for players.

The HSA sanctions adult teams that want to participate in mainland tournaments and acts as a clearing house for local tournaments, primarily to avoid scheduling conflicts.

"I want to see how best the HSA can support the new Waipio Complex," Fouts said. "I think we can sell Hawaii as a soccer destination. We've got year-round beautiful weather. Why not bring folks here."

Fouts is part of an over-50 women's team that plans to compete in the Veterans Cup in West Virginia next summer.

"I'd like to find out when that tournament is going to be held again and put a bid in right now to hold here," she said.

"I just want to work for the good of the game. I think the opening of the soccer complex was a perfect example of people putting their biases aside and working for a common goal. I hope that continues."

Tiffany Kayama and Leilani Green, Maui High School classmates and juniors at California Lutheran, are big contributors to the women's soccer team.

Kayama shares starting goalkeeper duties with freshman Pamala Clark. They have combined for seven shutouts.

The Regals, an NCAA Division III power, are 10-2 overall and 5-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"Tiffany Kayama is a major part of our program and team. Without the outstanding work of Tiffany and Pam we could not achieve success," said CLU head coach Dan Kuntz.

"We are honored to have Tiffany with CLU. She is an inspiration to the team. You will not find a person who is more dedicated and hard working."

Green, a reserve striker, has scored twice in the last three matches for the Regals.

Graig Sakuma (Kamehameha) has been a four-year starter on defense for the CLU Kingsmen. Kuntz reports Sakuma has been out with an ankle injury, but is expected back this week.

Kathy Sadayasu (Waiakea), a senior striker for the Southern Colorado University Thunderwolves, suffered a season-ending knee injury Sept. 15.

Sadayasu scored one goal on 16 shots in seven matches.

Erin Otagaki (Punahou), a junior striker, has scored three goals for eighth-ranked University of Washington.

The Huskies (9-1-0) host No. 12 Stanford tomorrow and No. 9 California Sunday.
