Now You Know

BUFFANBLU . . . AND PURE GOLd

Bullet When it comes to winning state titles, Punahou has struck gold more often than any other high school -- in the country.

According to the National Federation of State High School Association's September newsletter, the Buffanblu hold national records for most state championships in boys' soccer, swimming and volleyball and in girls' swimming, track and field and tennis. Overall, the NFHS says Punahou has racked up 287 state titles among 16 sports since 1956.

Back in the Day

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

Bullet Behind the passing of Stan Cadiente and receiving of Walter Rodrigues, the Farrington Governors pummeled McKinley, 38-0, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu football game in front of 16,556 fans at old Honolulu Stadium. The Governors, coached by Tom Kiyosaki, would go on to win their first ILH title since 1944 by downing Kamehameha, 16-6, on Thanksgiving Day.
