FRESNO, Calif. -- The fact that the University of Hawaii women's soccer team scored for the first time in three matches at Bulldog Stadium meant little. Wahine end
scoring drought
at Fresno, but loseFrom staff and wire reports
Host Fresno State held a commanding 4-0 lead when Hawaii's Malia Beter tallied the final goal in last night's Western Athletic Conference match.
"We were doing well," said UH head coach Pinsoom Tenzing.
Then, after a long pause, he added, "The first two (FSU) goals were saveable and the fourth was an unnecessary penalty."
Reyna Green put the Bulldogs on the board at 24:11 when she took a lead pass, beat a UH defender and arched her shot over Wahine goalkeeper Demarre Sanchez.
Four minutes later Jackie Jewell won a footrace to the ball, dribbled around Sanchez and scored.
Amber Houchen scored on another breakaway at 40:59 to give Fresno State (8-4-0 overall, 2-0-0 WAC) a comfortable 3-0 halftime advantage.
FSU's leading scorer, Jill Pearson, converted a penalty kick at 59:42 after being pulled down in the box by a UHdefender.
Beter's goal was set up by a cross from Erin Schremser.
"We'll know them better when we see them the next time," Tenzing said. "That's the only good thing to come out of the match."
The Wahine (2-8-2, 0-1-1) return home today. They have a nonconference game Friday against Central Washington, then play Nevada on Sunday in a WAC match.
