Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

Five years ago, opponents of a proposed two-tower
faculty housing project for the University of Hawaii
at the old Kapiolani Community College campus, above,
were celebrating. Gov. Ben Cayetano had signed an
executive order returning the 5.3 acres, at Pensacola
Street and Kapiolani Boulevard next to McKinley High
School, to the state Department of Education. The
nonprofit McKinley High School Community
announced plans to raise $18 million in private
donations to expand athletic facilities at McKinley,
including a new track and Olympic-size swimming pool.

Today, left, the site remains undeveloped. McKinley
Principal Milton Shishido says it is being used as a
construction storage site by Delta Construction. As
far as he knows, the fund-raising project is "at a
standstill" and in the two years he has been
principal, no one has talked to him about
any plans to expand athletic facilities.
