The bitter feelings from the Republican primary race between Whitney Anderson and Fred Hemmings have extended a generation or two. Anderson kin bitter
over GOP primaryIkaika Anderson, grandson of Rep. Sen. Whitney Anderson, who lost his re-election bid, says he's thinking about leaving the GOP because the party didn't back his grandfather. "I'm going to support the Democratic candidate in the general."
He said the GOP turned its back on Anderson and refused to support him when he ran in the primary election against former state Rep. Hemmings.
GOP officials denied Ikaika Anderson's charge, saying the party stayed neutral in the primary, but Anderson now says he's thinking about running for office in two years as a Democrat.
SILENT AUCTION: If the price is right, you can win a trip to Kahoolawe or a day in a taro patch -- all to help the Aloha Aina Political Party.
Beginning Oct. 11, Native Books will hold a silent auction at its Kapalama store with proceeds going to the fledgling party, which has two legislative candidates in this November's general election.
The party was founded in 1997 by Vicky Holt Takamine, a kumu hula who helped organize a vigil at the state Capitol to protest bills that affected native cultural and gathering rights.
The auction -- which will include donations from local arts and crafts creators -- is one of two major October campaign fund-raisers for the Aloha Aina candidates for state house seats. Malia Gibson is running for District 10 (North Central Maui) and Momi Kamahele is running for District 44 (Waianae-Makaha). A concert will be held Oct. 7 at the Waikiki Shell.
The Native Books store is at 1244 N. School St. Winning bids will be announced on Nov. 4.
