The cost of repairing the bow of the San Diego-based amphibious transport dock ship Denver, which collided with the oiler Yukon 180 miles west of Oahu on July 13, has been estimated at $2.9 million.

Damage to the Yukon was estimated at $3.6 million to $4.1 million, according to the Military Sealift Command, which operates the ship.

Capt. Charles Webber, skipper of the Denver, was re-assigned pending the outcome of the Navy investigation.

The USS Norfolk, an Atlantic-based submarine, was the first to receive the Navy's new quality-of-life improvement -- new spring mattresses to replace existing polyfoam ones.

The new innerspring mattresses are part of a $36 million program to boost the Navy's sagging-bed problem.

Other boats in the Atlantic Fleet, anchored at Norfolk, Va., will receive them as each boat nears deployment or as supplies become available.
