Rose breaks
Harvard mark

Former Pac-Five football standout Neil Rose set a single-game passing record for Harvard University in a 42-37 comeback victory over Brown on Saturday.

The University High graduate completed 24 of 38 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns.

Brown was ahead, 31-21, before Rose rallied the Crimson to the Ivy League victory.

Rose, a junior, opened the season as the backup, but moved up to the top spot in the second half of the Crimson's first game of the season against Holy Cross. He went 7-for-9 passing in a 27-25 loss to the Crusaders two weeks ago.

Kop shoots 89 in qualifier

Wendell Kop of Honolulu shot an 89 yesterday in the first round in stroke-play qualifying of the USGA Men's Senior Amateur Championship at Charlotte, N.C.

Kop played the front nine at the 6,622-yard Charlotte Country Club in 44 and the back nine in 45.

Vinny Giles of Richmond, Va., shot a 1-under-par 70 for the lead going into today's final qualifying round, when the field will be trimmed from 156 players to 64.

Match play will begin tomorrow and conclude with the final round on Friday.

Vulcans down 'Swords

Hawaii-Hilo defeated Chaminade, 8-15, 15-5, 15-9, 15-13, in women's volleyball yesterday at McCabe Gym.

Heidi Frabritz and Megan Denman led UH-Hilo (4-6) with nine and eight kills, respectively, and Denman had 34 assists.

The Silverswords (2-9) were led by Juliann Hastert with 13 kills.

Runners 2-3 in Japan

Heather Matz-Jorris of Hawaii finished second yesterday in the half marathon held in Ichinoseki, Japan.

Running in rainy weather, Matz-Jorris was timed in one hour, 21 minutes, 31 seconds. Former Hawaii resident Cheryl Brady was third in 1:23:11. Debbie Hornsby of Honolulu was timed in 1:41:20.

HPU edges BYUH

Pierre Byman scored from seven yards out in the 86th minute to power Hawaii Pacific University to a 2-1 nonconference win over Brigham Young Hawaii in a men's soccer match Saturday.

Todd Pitts put BYUH (1-4-0) ahead in the 37th minute with a goal from 10 yards out.

Toni Stephanov, playing his first match of the season for HPU (4-1-1) because of injuries, tied the score with a goal three minutes into the second half.

Jennings sparkles again

Summer Jennings continues to shine for the Colorado State University women's volleyball team.

The University High graduate was named to the All-Golden Dome tournament team after the Rams (14-1) swept host and 25th ranked Notre Dame and No. 22 Loyola Marymount last weekend.

It was the third consecutive week the senior middle blocker earned all-tournament honors.

UH's Smith a winner

Hawaii's Cheryl Smith and Long Beach State's Larry Henderson were the individual winners while San Diego State (women) and Long Beach State (men) took team honors in Saturday's UH Invitational cross-country meet at the Kaneohe Klipper golf course.
