It's about time
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

It's been 20 years since the first nine trustees of the Office of
Hawaiian Affairs were elected, and this year is as pivotal as
1980. It was a historic moment when the trustees were sworn
into office on Nov. 26, 1980, in the state Senate chambers.
The late Rev. Abraham Akaka gave his blessing, while
then-Hawaii Chief Justice William Richardson, at right,
prepared to swear them in. The first trustees were Peter
Apo, Roy Benham, Rod Burgess, Frenchy DeSoto,
Thomas Kaulukukui, Moses Keale, Joe Kealoha,
Walter Ritte Jr. and Malama Solomon.

Last Wednesday, an interim board of trustees appointed
by Gov. Ben Cayetano gathered for their first meeting.
They are, clockwise from bottom left: OHA administrator
Randy Ogata, Nani Brandt, Elei Beniamina, Dante
Carpenter, Hannah Springer, Gladys Brandt and
Nalani Olds. This year is another historic one for
OHA, with non-Hawaiians being allowed both
to vote for candidates and to run as candidates.
A total of 97 people are running in this year's
OHA election, Nov. 7.
