UH releases 2001
baseball schedule

The 2001 University of Hawaii baseball schedule features seven teams that qualified for postseason tournaments a year ago.

Western Athletic Conference members Fresno State, San Jose State, Rice and newcomer Nevada plus Wichita State and UCLA were in the NCAA tournament.

Lewis-Clark State is the defending NAIA national champion.

The Rainbows have three series before opening WAC play.

Longtime foes Cal State Sacramento (Jan. 25-27) and UCLA (Feb. 1-3) provide the opposition the first two weeks.

First-time visitor Louisville is here the weekend before Hawaii welcomes the Nevada Wolf Pack to WAC baseball.

Rainbow head coach Les Murakami isn't worried about the early WAC start because "everyone is in the same boat."

Hawaii makes one road trip, to Fresno State and San Jose State, prior to the Easter Tournament.

The 'Bows come home to play Rice, Texas Christian and the return series with the Spartans.

The Rainbow Easter Tournament will have seven teams in the Green (NCAA I teams) and White (non-NCAA I teams) divisions.

'BOW BUNTS:

Ian Jones had surgery on his right elbow earlier this month to remove bone chips. He expects to be ready when the season begins. ... Outfielder Rah-Miel Mitchell, who would have been a junior, opted not to return to the Rainbows this season. ... Junior college recruit Matt Ward, a right-handed pitcher from Utah Valley State, returned to the mainland after a week at UH. "He said he planned on getting married and it was too expensive here," Murakami said.
