Tour shifts to
Lower Trestles

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. -- Reigning world champion Mark Occhilupo of Australia and current Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour leader Sunny Garcia of Hawaii head a field of 48 wave riders in the Billabong Pro at Lower Trestles next week.

Joining Garcia in the Hawaii contingent will be Shane Dorian, winner of the recent Billabong Pro meet in Spain, along with Ross Williams, Kalani Robb and Shawn Sutton.

The men will surf Sept. 25-30 while the Billabong Women's Pro and Junior Pro contests will be held Sept. 29-Oct. 1 during San Clemente's Soul in the Bowl Festival.

Symphony benefit run set

The Symphony Guild of Honolulu's 20th anniversary OPUS 20 Fun Run will be held Sunday, Oct. 15, starting at 7:30 a.m. from Fort Ruger Park.

All participants in the four-mile event receive an OPUS 20 T-shirt and a coupon for 50 percent discount for admission for two to any of the Symphony's 2000-2001 concerts.

The fun run has been supporting the Honolulu Symphony, its musicians, youth and education programs, instrument loan programs and classical music events in Hawaii since 1980.

Suan, Lempa at Na Koa

University of Hawaii running backs coach Wes Suan and defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa will be the featured speakers at the Na Koa Football Club's meeting Monday at the Stan Sheriff Arena Hospitality Room.

The public is invited to the 11:30 a.m. gathering.

Suan and Lempa will use film clips to review the UTEP game which is scheduled for tomorrow at 3:05 p.m. (KFVE and KCCN, 1420-AM) in El Paso, Texas.

The coaches will also discuss the the upcoming home game against Tulsa on Sept. 30.

In-line teams to Vegas

Three Hawaii teams will compete in the 2000 USA Hockey InLine Cup at the Crystal Palace Sports Complex in Las Vegas Oct. 5-8.

The 50th State Sharks and the Steelheads will compete in men's novice division, and Aces Wild will compete in the men's 30-and-over division.

Hula Bowl hoops, golf

The Rivals.com Hula Bowl Maui Senior All-Star Football Classic is running a basketball and a golf tournament.

The Hula Bowl Maui 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge will be held at the Maui Mall parking lot Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21-22 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

The cost for a maximum four-person team is $80, and each player will receive a tank top and a Hula Bowl football game ticket.

Applications are available at Hula Bowl store in the Maui Mall.

The Heisman Hula Bowl Golf Tournament will be held at the Dunes at Maui Lani on Jan. 18, 2001 with a noon shotgun start.

The cost is $150 per person for the four-person team format. Each team will play with a football star.

Stone postpones attempt

Tom Stone has postponed his attempt at paddleboarding solo from Oahu to Kauai.

Stone was going to try this weekend, but has rescheduled to Friday, Oct. 13.

Safeway to feed runners

Safeway will feed a post-event breakfast to the expected 4,000 runners and walkers in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday at Kapiolani Park.

Among the treats to be offered are egg burritos, bagels, juice, coffee, fruit and cheese.

Safeway is the sponsor of the race which is run to help in the fight against breast cancer.
