While New England explodes in fall colors, Hawaii's seasonal shift is apparent only to discerning eyes.

Berries and seed pods in the yellows, oranges and browns of fall are all coming out on local foliage, said Patsy Gibson, who is spearheading decor for The Outdoor Circle's Beautification Bash Oct. 7.

She'll be using cuttings from some unusual plants to create centerpieces for the event.

"We thought it might be more fun to do that than to have tropical flowers all over the room," she said. "We want to give people ideas, so what would normally be thrown away is seen for its artistic possibilities."

Arrangements will include fruit and foliage from sea hyacinth, croton, sea grape, lilikoi, natal plum, fan palm, calabash and the blue marble tree, according to Gibson.

An appreciation for the aesthetics of Hawaii's natural environment is at the root of the Outdoor Circle's mission.

"We all have the same goal, which is the motto of the Outdoor Circle, to keep things clean green and beautiful," said Gibson. "I really appreciate the things the Outdoor Circle does for this island."

A ban on billboards, urban reforestation and even the selection of the state flower can be credited to the 88-year-old organization.

The group is strengthening its forces by broadening its membership to include professionals in law, marketing and landscaping, according to Steve Mechler, a landscape architect and co-chair of the planting committee.

"It's not just a bunch of little old ladies in tennis shoes chaining themselves to monkey pod trees," he said.

In addition to its exotic decor, the Beautification Bash will feature a fashion show, silent and live auctions and a bachelor auction/variety show.
