Whether you prefer your wine made of grapes or rice, you can go back to school next month and learn more about it. The University of Hawaii-Manoa's Outreach College is offering these classes promoting better boozes:

Bullet Vintage Program in Wine Appreciation: Six sessions introducing major wine regions, grape varieties, interpretation of labels, wine service and wine storage. Instructor: Alan Jahns, general manger, JMD Beverages. Classes 7-9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 5-Nov. 9, JMD Educational Center, Aiea; $135.
Bullet Introduction to Sake: A workshop introducing eight premium sakes and explaining the characteristics of different grades. Sake no sakana, or appetizers paired to the sakes will be served. Instructor: Chris Pearce, sake broker and author of "The Joy of Sake." One class, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, Furusato Japanese Restaurant, Hyatt Regency Hotel, Waikiki; $62.

Chefs guest at KCC dinners

Kapiolani Community College will bring a series of guest chefs to campus to lead culinary students through the preparation of special dinners in the Tamarind Dining Room:

Bullet Hideaki Miyoshi, Tokkuri Tei Restaurant: Wahoku (Japanese food) and Yoshoku (Western food in Japanese style), through Saturday. Nine-course meal.
Bullet Fetah Benali, Casablanca Restaurant: Moroccan cuisine, Tuesday-Sept. 30.
Bullet Noreen Lam, Contemporary Museum cafe: California Cuisine-inspired menu, Oct. 10-14. Lam trained at the Stars restaurant with Jeremiah Tower.
Dinners are $35, with seatings at 6, 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. On Saturdays, customers who plan to attend 8 p.m. Diamond Head Theatre productions may request earlier reservations. Call 734-9488.

Bullet DeLoach Wine Dinner: Sam Choy's Diamond Head presents a four-course meal paired with wines of the DeLoach winery, 6 p.m. Sept. 27. Dishes include prawns with white truffle and blue crab glaze with a 1998 Fume Blanc; moi in garlic-soy-butter sauce with '98 OFS Chardonnay; prosciutto and cheese sandwich with duck breast and foie gras with '98 Pinot Noir; lamb stuffed with goat cheese and leeks with '98 Los Amigos Cabernet Sauvignon. Bullet Local Spotlight: Palomino offers a special menu featuring local produce, tomorrow through Oct. 19. Chef Fred DeAngelo's menu includes crab-stuffed mahimahi, fish roasted in a wood oven and a dessert sampler. Call 528-2400.
Bullet Domaine De La Romanee Conti tasting dinner: Rare reds from Burgundy, France, will be paired with dishes by chef Russell Siu, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28, 3660 on the Rise. Bullet Winemaker Dinner: Pacific Cafe's Chef Jean-Marie Josselin will prepare a dinner to be accompanied by wines from David Bruce Winery at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29. The dinner includes: cantaloupe ama ebi; truffle oxtail consommé; lobster sweet bread pot pie; seared sea bass; and orange float with ginger mochi ice cream. Cost is $75. Bullet Waialua Taro Festival: Celebrate taro-growing and eating, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Lili'uokalani Protestant Church, Haleiwa. Featuring: laulau recipe contest ($1 to taste), taro-related exhibits, plant sale, poi-pounding, art contest, arts and crafts, food booths, entertainment. Trolley tours of Haleiwa and Waialua, with a visit to a taro farm, hourly, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Walking tours of the church, cemetery and Emerson House at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bullet Breakfast at the races: Participants in the 2000 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Sunday will be treated to burritos, bagels and cream cheese, fruit, juice and coffee, courtesy of Safeway. The one-mile walk or 5K run begins at 7:30 a.m. Entry fee is $22. Call 973-5967.
Bullet Grand Opening: Down to Earth in Kailua will feature a live K-108 "Health Talk" radio show and a question and answer session with Dr. Terry Shintani at a grand opening celebration 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. Race for the Cure

More than 3,000 participants are expected in the 6th annual Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Hawaii 2000 "Race for the Cure," taking place Sunday at Kapiolani Park.

The 5K run/walk and one-mile family walk is one of 109 scheduled nationwide to raise funds for eradicating breast cancer.

If you haven't signed up by now, late registration will be taken 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at JC Penney Ala Moana, third floor. Registration is also being taken online at www.raceforthecurehawaii.org and in person at Kapiolani Women's Center.

Late packet pickup will run from 6 to 6:45 a.m. the day of the race, with introductions at 7 a.m., the race/walk staring at 7:30 a.m. and the family walk at 7:45 a.m. Live entertainment by Ho'oala will begin at 8 a.m., along with a complimentary breakfast buffet provided by Safeway.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, who died of breast cancer at age 36.

Free prostate screening

St. Francis Medical Center is offering free prostate cancer screenings for men Saturday in recognition of September as National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, exceeded only by lung cancer.

The screenings, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Mama Lau Cancer Center on SFMC's Liliha campus, are open to men age 50 and older who have never been screened for prostate cancer. Special consideration will be given to men 40 and older if there is a family history of prostate cancer.

The screening involves a rectal exam and a blood test.

Appointments are limited and will be taken on a first come, first-serve basis. Call 547-6798.

Get street savvy

A street safety survival course for women will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at St. Francis Medical Center at 2230 Liliha St.

Participants will learn skills to protect themselves from physical harassment, domestic violence and sexual assault, with a focus on prevention skills and countermeasures based on common types of encounters. The course will combine lecture with instruction in physical techniques.

The program is being offered by PLETC (Points of Integrity Law Enforcement Training Center), a service organization that teaches techniques used by the FBI, DEA and other law enforcement agencies to address the needs of the private sector.

The class will take place in the Weinberg Medical Pavilion 5th floor Conference Center. The fee is $30. Register at 547-6410.
