Who Wants To Be A Politician?

House District 44

Makaha, Waianae

*Denotes incumbent

Emily J. Daniel Auwae*

REPUBLICAN
Age: 57
Job:
State representative for District 44
Years here:
57

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

Integrity, dedication and the courage to do what is right. A lifelong Waianae resident, I am deeply committed to improving our community. With common sense leadership and financial experience, I am always careful with how government spends your hard-earned tax dollars. I work hard, listen to you and represent you.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

1) Improve education -- increase accountability and more financial support that goes directly to educating our keiki. 2) Economic revitalization -- encourage growth by reducing taxes and fostering industries like diversified agriculture. 3) Improve roadways -- we spend too much time waiting in traffic and safety is a serious problem with dangerous pedestrian crossings and rampant speeding.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Yes, the civil service system is outdated. To improve government efficiency, worker morale and the quality of service that the state provides, the system needs to be modernized. For example, allow greater flexibility in hiring qualified workers.

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

I have an in-depth knowledge of how the Legislature works, have good rapport with most of the House members, and have a proven history of enacting legislation to help not only my district but also the entire state.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

These are the pressing issues: 1) developing and sustaining growth of the economy 2) education -- we need a better trained work force; we need to anticipate the nature of newly created jobs and 3) the drug problem; prevention, treatment, re-education of users.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

First, we must take a good look at what is and is not necessary to attract and maintain qualified personnel in our civil service system. We cannot make major changes without considering the morale of our public servants.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

a) Education: I intend to strengthen programs at the elementary and secondary level by providing more resources for teachers. b) Criminal justice: I seek to reduce crime through "Weed and Seed" type programs. ... c) Self-determination and sovereignty: I intend to support the Hawaiian community's efforts toward realization of nationhood in a form chosen by the people.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Changes are needed to the civil service system that include evaluation of one's job should be based on performance and not seniority, and pay raises should be for all levels within this system.
