Michael P. Kahikina*

DEMOCRAT
Age: 50
Job:
State representative/ clubhouse director of Boys & Girls Club Waianae, Nanakuli Extension
Years here:
50

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

With my experience and background I bring issues that effect the little guy. The disadvantage constituent have an advocate for them, the voiceless have a voice. As Director of BGCW-N I bring the youth and family issues to the Capitol with thoughts of solutions.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

Ecology/environment and how we use the precious resources Hawaii have. We need to learn to share and care for our 'aina. The economy is slowly picking up, but not to the point of full recovery. We need to stimulate more long lasting growth for Hawaii ... And the native Hawaiian issue will never go away unless we the people stand for justice and be not afraid to make those decisions that needs to be legislated. ...

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

We have and will continue to seek a fair and just way to mend civil service; the work is still in progress. Taking benefits outside of state is some of the issues I'd address. Other states require their retirees to live in the state to receive benefits and most do not cover the retiree's spouse's after retiring (although I do not support cutting that benefit). Also conversions to cost-effective plans ...

Denton Kissell

REPUBLICAN
Age: 35
Job:
Vice president of Specialties Hawaii Inc. Construction Co.
Years here:

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

Being a small business owner and active member of my community, I can share my hard work attitude to bring our community into this new century. A good knowledge of the business industry will help bring a good economic sense for the state. Being a member of the neighborhood board brings sense of my community.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

Schools in my district are my first issue. We need schools that all parents, students and teachers can be proud of. Second, we need to build an access road for our residents and bring Farrington Highway up to all safety standards. We need to shut down all drug houses in our community.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

We need to continue on the path of civil service reform. The only changes needed are to elect people that have the guts to continue this process. People who are afraid to make these tough decisions need not apply.
