Mark Moses*

REPUBLICAN
Age: 52
Job:
State representative/retired U.S. Marine Corps major
Years here:
19

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

A two-term incumbent in the House of Representatives and a member of the Finance, Transportation and Labor committees and the OMPO Policy Committee has given me the opportunity to meet the needs of our district as is evident in the $487 million budget earmarked for projects supporting my district and statewide.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

a) The privatization of a prison facility, the recruitment of new police officers and their retention is essential in the safeguarding of our neighborhoods and citizens. b) Ensure our children have the quality education in well-maintained facilities. c) Reduce regulations to allow businesses to prosper and create new jobs.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Preserve the promises made to current employees. Changes must only affect new hires. Reduce government size only through normal attrition with the exception of the resource-starved, personnel-strapped Child Protection Services of Department of Human Services.

Maeda C. Timson

DEMOCRAT
Age: 49
Job:

Years here:
49

What are the unique qualifications you bring to this job?

Our district is on the move, full of vitality. To keep our district ahead of the curve, we'll need effective representation in the House, someone able to get results. I bring 29 years of working in our neighborhoods solving problems, getting the job done. I strongly believe in people working together.

What are the top three issues facing Hawaii (from most pressing to least)?

Economy, education, environment.

Are changes needed to the civil service system? If so, what are they?

Gov. Cayetano signed Act 253 this June, the boldest step in 60 years to modernize civil service. Given new tools, the state has two years to re-engineer its civil service system. From my finance background, I support this and continued modernization to make it more responsive and efficient for workers and taxpayers.
