The Wahine failed to score for the third consecutive match, yet University of Hawaii head coach Pinsoom Tenzing still is not that concerned about it. Lions defeat Wahine
with late goalBy Al Chase
Star-BulletinLoyola Marymount, which has experienced its own problems denting the net in 2000, broke a 0-0 deadlock on Stacy Roberts' head shot just 2 minutes and 3 seconds from the final whistle.
The 1-0 victory gave the Lions (5-1-1) the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Festival title before 1,111 fans at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Roberts scored off of a corner kick by Erica Florez. It came after UH defender Liz Lusk foiled an LMU breakaway with a sliding tackle that pushed the ball over the end line.
Roberts' head shot bounced down and inside the back post.
Wahine thrusts into the Lions half of the field were met with long clearing shots that quickly ate up the remaining time.
Three minutes before the goal, UH's Arlene Devitt centered a ball from the right to an unmarked Dawn Dasher about 15 yards out.
Dasher trapped, turned and kicked a hard, low shot toward the far post, but was denied by a diving, finger-tip save by Lions' goalkeeper Tracy Sharp.
"It's one of the best games she has played in a long time," LMU head coach Gregg Murphy said of Sharp. "Thanks to her, I think she preserved the win."
As expected, with five Hawaii players on the LMU roster, the match was intense and physical.
"We knew this was going to be ... well, a no-holds-barred battle tonight. No doubt about it," Murphy said.
"I thought it was a great game. I really felt Hawaii deserved to win. But, we've been finding ways to win late in the game."
The Lions had the better of the passing game early and forced UH goalkeeper Veronica Flores to make three fairly difficult saves.
An LMU free kick at 29:05 hit the crossbar, bounced down, rattled around and was finally smothered by Flores.
"Veronica is doing well. I'm truly pleased with the way she is playing," Tenzing said.
But, where the Wahine are having difficulty and the Lions had the edge was in the midfield play.
"In the middle of the field we're giving away too many balls," Tenzing said. "They need to be a little more composed. We've got the players to organize."
UH (2-5-1) has two road matches this week then opens Western Athletic Conference play against San Jose State on Sept. 28.
"If we play like this we'll be OK in the WAC," Tenzing said.
"We gave up a few things, but whatever we wanted to accomplish we did. Their impact players were nullified. We did a really good job there."
