Machado takes
surf title

American Rob Machado defeated Taj Burrow of Australia in the final of the Figueira Pro 2000 surfing contest yesterday at Figueira da Foz, Portugal.

Machado collected the $20,000 first prize and climbed into fourth place in the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Championship Tour ratings.

Burrow beat WCT ratings leader Sunny Garcia of Hawaii in a close semifinal after eliminating Hawaii's Kalani Robb in the quarterfinals.

Garcia extended his ratings lead since his closest rival, Australian Luke Egan, was eliminated earlier.

The World Championship Tour heads back to California for the Billabong Pro at Trestles Sept. 24-29.

HPU women win
overtime soccer duel

Jannicke Snildal's goal two minutes into overtime gave Hawaii Pacific University a 2-1 women's soccer victory over Cal State Hayward yesterday at Atherton Field on HPU's Windward campus.

The Sea Warriors broke the 1-1 deadlock after Cal State Hayward goalkeeper Monica Pauley couldn't get a handle on Liane Watanabe's corner kick. The ball bounced around, then was headed by Amanda Rodriguez over Pauley's head and onto the foot of Snildal, who tapped in the game winner.

Pauley, who made 11 saves, several of them spectacular, was beaten for the tying goal in the 88th minute by Jill Fujimoto, from five yards out off a cross by Taryn Geolina.

Morgan Buckingham had scored for the Lady Pioneers on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

HPU's second overtime victory over Cal State Hayward in a week improved its season record to 7-5, tying the school single-season victory mark.

It was the final men's distance race before the Oct. 8 Molokai Hoe. The women's long-distance season concludes next Sunday with Na Wahine O Ke Kai.

Boths 40-mile races begin off Hale O Lono, Molokai, and finish at Oahu's Waikiki Beach.
