HONAUNAU, Hawaii -- Two motorists were killed in accidents involving a black bull on Keala O Keawe Road in South Kona late Saturday, police said.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accidents.

Responding to an 11:37 p.m. call, police learned that a 1962 Porsche coupe driven by Lloyd Rice, 48, of Honaunau had hit the bull, then an embankment, and finally flipped over.

A 1995 Ford pickup truck driven by Walter Andrade, 20, of Honaunau, then hit the Porsche, throwing Rice and his passenger, Micha Otranto, 18, of Opihihale, onto the road.

They were taken to Kona Hospital, where they died shortly after 3 a.m. yesterday.

Another passenger, Zachary Barawis, 21, was hospitalized in stable condition with a fractured arm.

Andrade was treated at the hospital and released.

The deaths bring the Big Island traffic toll for the year to 30 compared to 22 at the same time last year.
