One dead,
one hurt in
Kauai shootings

The two cases are believed
linked, but no motive
is yet determined

LIHUE -- One man was killed and another wounded in two shooting incidents this morning in Hanamaulu. Kauai police said they arrested a suspect in the killing.

At 8:24 a.m., police received a call that there had been a shooting at Hanamaulu Beach Park. Officers found a man who had been shot and sent him by ambulance to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. His condition was unknown.

Three minutes later and about two miles away, residents of the 4000 block of Hoohana Street reported hearing gunshots from a house on their block.

Officers found a man barricaded inside a house at 4276 Hoohana St. Detective Marvin Rivera and Officer Wes Perriera convinced the man to surrender at 9:22 a.m.

Officers found the body of a man inside the house. He apparently died of a gunshot wound.

Detectives believe the two shootings may be linked, but they had not determined a motive for either as of late this morning.

The house is less than a block from King Kaumualii Elementary School, and teachers did not allow children to go outside their classrooms for much of the morning, police said.

The killing is the fifth on Kauai this year.

On March 12, Miu-Lan Aguiar was fatally burned in her Eelele home. Her husband, Gregory, is awaiting trial for murder. On June 26, Jeffry Brisebois was shot to death while asleep in his Wainiha home. Matthew Blankswade, his daughter's boyfriend, has been charged in the killing. Police are seeking the killers in two other murders: Lis Bissell was found dead near Polihale State Park on April 7, and Daren Singer was found dead at Pakalas Point Beach Aug. 30. Both had been beaten, stabbed and raped.
