It's about time
Photographs often are the best way to show dramatic changes in Hawaii, providing an easy update on landmarks, persons and events. At other times, however, photos showing minimal changes during the years remind us that the more things change, the more they remain the same. Look for examples of big and little changes every Monday in "It's about time," which will inform, update and prod a few memories.

Political yard signs have become more popular during the
past decade, after a federal court said a Honolulu ban on
them was a violation of free speech. In Waipahu, across
from the high school, above, a fence is plastered with
signs for many candidates in many races.

Camera Hawaii
Forty years ago, the political sign wavers seemed a bit
more resourceful and clever, as seen in this Camera
Hawaii photo, left, of supporters of GOP candidate
Fred Titcomb, who was running for Congress.
Republicans resorted to hoisting 10-foot-high
signs bearing jingles to gain the attention of
motorists. Titcomb was swamped in 1960
by incumbent Daniel K. Inouye, who never
lost a subsequent election and went on to
become a U.S. senator. Titcomb himself
served as District Court judge for 30 years.
He died March 10.

In 1958, one year before Hawaii could claim statehood
and before high-tech set in, the City Clerk's office had
to deal with bags of Primary Election returns. Anita
Nakatani, left, and Victoria Kaeo check bag tags
before the ballots went into storage for six months.

Voters, like the ones above, have been casting
absentee ballots in a steady stream at Honolulu
Hale since Sept. 11. This year's Primary
Election is on Saturday.
