Wong case judge rejects subpoenas for gov, AGs

Gov. Ben Cayetano, Attorney General Earl Anzai and former Attorney General Margery Bronster do not have to testify in the perjury case against former Kamehameha Schools trustee Richard "Dickie" Wong, a state judge ruled today.

Circuit Judge Michael Town rejected the subpoenas seeking testimony by Cayetano, Anzai and Bronster, saying Wong's attorneys failed to show the relevance of their prospective testimonies.

Lawyers for Wong and local developer Jeffrey Stone had called for Cayetano and the Attorney General's Office to take the witness stand, alleging that they abused their powers in the investigation of the Kamehameha Schools and the criminal case against Wong.

Wong initially was indicted for theft in connection with a Bishop Estate land deal involving Stone, Wong's former brother-in-law. Town dismissed the theft case but left intact the perjury charge. Trial for Wong's perjury case is tentatively scheduled to begin Nov. 6.

Student head, state rep favor autonomy for UH

State Rep. Bob McDermott and Chris Garnier, University of Hawaii student body president, have come out in support of the November constitutional amendment that would give the university autonomy.

According to McDermott, autonomy would allow the Legislature to free up the university, not micromanage it, as the University of Hawaii's Professional assembly has alleged.

Garnier said the university needs autonomy for academic freedom, to control its revenue and have exclusive authority with respect to employees and control over the disposition of all UH lands.
