When fall practice ended, University of Hawaii head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said he felt the Wahine would be scoring buckets of goals this year.

The bucket must be empty. The Wahine can't seem to buy a goal.

Last night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium, the drought continued and UH suffered it second consecutive shutout defeat.

But the zero on the Hawaii side of the scoreboard wasn't due to a lack of opportunities.

Twice in the first half, University of Arkansas freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Haywood stopped UH freshman striker Arlene Devitt point blank on breakaways.

"Those were two sensational saves," Arkansas coach Alan Kirkup said.

Haywood's effort kept the Lady Razorbacks (1-3-2) from falling behind, a situation they had experienced often this year.

Then, just 44 seconds into the second half, freshman Courtney Shaub, Haywood's high school teammate, scored from 12 yards out to give Arkansas its first lead in six matches this season.

"Maybe we scored a little bit too early. It looked like we sort of relaxed after the goal," Kirkup said.

The Lady Razorbacks defense, led by Erin Sampson and Kellie Bedient, bent but did not break the rest of the half in the 1-0 win.

The Wahine (2-4-1) outshot the Lady Razorbacks 10-5 in the second half, but could not draw even.

At least two crosses traveled from one side of the goal mouth to the other only to miss an onrushing Wahine foot by inches.

Other chances were lost or hurried because the first or controlling touch on the ball wasn't executed well enough.

For Veronica Flores, UH's leading scorer last year, but inserted as the goalkeeper 12 minutes into the match, it was frustrating to watch scoring chances evaporate.

"I really wanted to get up there and help out," said Flores who added adventure to the position by roaming far from the goal line.

Flores replaced Liz Lusk early when the Lady Razorbacks were controlling the tempo.

"I felt we had 15 minutes of the first half where we were able to put them under some pressure," Kirkup said. We had three corners in a row and didn't score. After that, Hawaii got right back in it."

Not happy with his back line, Tenzing put Lusk in at left back and Leila Wai in at right back. The moves stabilized the defense.

"We had to make adjustments. Our defense was totally disorganized," Tenzing said.

"Leila is a solid defender and Carmel (Hurley) was off her game so I didn't bring her back."

"We were lacking on the flank. The kind of game you want to see is from Jen Starsiak on the other (right) side. There was nothing on the other (left) side."

Starsiak had several good runs in the second half resulting in testing crosses to the middle, but none could be converted.

Tenzing is still searching for the right combinations.

"It was a good game. I don't think we were very, very good in anything," Tenzing said.

"I'm just dejected because we didn't win this game."
