Castle checks McKinley
in clash of unbeatens

Star-Bulletin staff

Ninth-ranked Castle stole the magic from No. 5 McKinley's homecoming last night, holding off a late rally to win, 24-21, at Roosevelt in a battle of unbeaten Oahu Interscholastic Association White Division teams.

"McKinley is a hugely talented team, but we told our kids that the only pressure is the pressure we put on ourselves," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said of facing the Tigers, whose average margin of victory was 31 points. "We were very focused tonight."

Kaleo Segovia totaled 133 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns to lead Castle.

After Segovia scored to put the Knights up 17-7 in the fourth quarter, McKinley's Kimo Terry fumbled the kickoff, but recovered the ball, and went 63 yards for a score.

The teams then traded touchdowns, with McKinley's Vaa Fonoti running in from four yards out to make the score 24-21 with 34 seconds remaining.

Castle recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock.

Fonoti, the White's leading rusher, tallied 132 yards for the Tigers.

Leilehua 17, Aiea 14

The Mules scored their first offensive points of the regular season and rallied to beat Na Alii in a Red Division game.

"We've been struggling," Leilehua coach Cass Ishitani said. "So this win is great for our kids, especially coming from behind, because it was really frustrating not scoring in four games."

In the Mules' other regular season win, their defense scored a safety in a 2-0 shutout of Roosevelt.

Trailing 14-10 last night, Leilehua wide receiver Joshua Tomas caught a hitch pass behind the line of scrimmage and then threw a strike downfield to McKenzie Hanson, who outraced the Aiea safety for the 76-yard winning touchdown with 3:20 left.

It wasn't a surprise play, according to Ishitani, but a variation of a play the Mules ran all night.

Tomas also had a big night on defense, intercepting two Na Alii passes in the end zone.
