UH in fifth heading
into final round

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of Hawaii men's golf team heads into today's final round in fifth place at the William H. Tucker Golf Tournament.

Brigham Young leads the 23-team field with a 280.

The five-member UH team, led by Scott Carlyle's even-par 72, shot a 292 yesterday.

Yokomoto medalist

Beau Yokomoto shot a 70 yesterday to take medalist honors by four strokes in the qualifying round of the Aloha Section PGA Match Play Championship on the Links at Kuilima yesterday.

Brian Sasada was second with a 74 and Larry Stubblefield, Brad Davis and Scott Gileta tied for third, another shot back.

HPU women over .500

Hawaii Pacific downed Union College, 2-1, yesterday in women's soccer at Atherton Field to win their fifth match in the past six games.

HPU moved past the .500 mark at 6-5 after rallying from a 1-0 deficit on goals by Liane Watanabe and Taryn Geolina.

The Lady Sea Warriors play Cal State-Hayward tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Kaneohe before taking a three-week break.

UH runners out of meet

The University of Hawaii Wahine cross-country team pulled out of today's Chaminade Invitational.

Wahine coach Johnny Faerber said UH would have been the only Division I team in the meet, and the results wouldn't have counted.

UH hosts its only home meet of the season Sept. 23 at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course.

UH coaches at QB Club

University of Hawaii assistant football coaches Rich Miano and Dan Morrison will be two of the featured speakers at Monday's 11:30 a.m. Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Harold Tanaka, the head football coach at Farrington High School, is also scheduled to speak.

In addition, Hiroshi Yamauchi, co-chair of the Friends of Hawaii's Swimming and Diving Legacy, will describe the group's efforts to expand awareness of Hawaii's aquatic sports.

Women's football league

The Hawaii Legends are among the teams scheduled to compete in the Women's Professional Football League for the 2000-2001 season.

The season will start Oct. 14, and it will run through the title game on Feb. 3, 2001 at Daytona Beach, Fla.

Two of the league teams are from New York with other teams located in Daytona Beach, Rhode Island, Colorado, Miami, Houston, Minnesota, Tampa, Oklahoma City, and Texas.

A tryout for the Hawaii team will be held Sept. 23 on Kauai at a site to be determined.

Dorian loses, Hayes wins

Hawaii's Shane Dorian was eliminated yesterday in the second round of the Figueira Pro 2000 surf contest in Portugal by Tiago Pires.

Dorian won last week's Association of Surfing Professionals event in Spain.

Conan Hayes, also from Hawaii, advanced to the third round with a victory over defending ASP world champion Mark Occhilupo.

Hawaii's Shawn Sutton won his first round heat to advanced to round two.
