Holden’s ‘best’
was for his dad

BOB Holden's exquisitely carved nene goose was judged Best in Show in the Hawaii Forest Industry Association's annual Wood Show. The show closes tomorrow at Aloha Tower at Pier 9. The Mug shotwood-crafted furniture, ukulele and other objects are impressive. Bob's victory was extremely meaningful to him as he had dedicated the nene entry in his father's memory, the father he never knew. Robert Holden Sr.'s B-17 Flying Fortress was shot down over the English Channel on Sept. 8, 1944. The 21-year-old radioman-gunner was on his 10th mission. This wood show opened on the same day the plane went down, 56 years later. "I was 6 weeks old," Bob said. "He did know I was born. I never met him but I feel very close to him" ...

There are big bucks out there

The Honolulu market for luxury properties is flying high. Prudential Location's Jo Frasier and Worrall's Marysia Coleman combined to sell developer Jack and Zelie Myers' Diamond Head home for $9 million. The folks at Coldwell Banker are smiling about Anne Hogan Perry and Penny Bradley selling a vacant lot on Diamond Head Road for $7.6 million. Their colleague, lively Margaret Murchie, received an offer on a $1 million home at a garage sale at the same home. Then there's Coldwell's Fred Lunt, who also plays steel guitar. The day Fred left on tour with the Hula Blues Band, he had a $1.2 million Tantalus home in escrow ...

Besides Fred, the band includes Pat Cockett, Pancho Graham, Wayne Jacintho and Michael Barretto. The band backed up Taj Mahal at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. As for Fred's $1.2 million listing, the deal closed the day he returned. Fred's not singing the blues, no way ...

Chef Andrew Marion-Copley at the Lodge at Koele got a chance to show off his creativity when rock star Lenny Kravitz called from the mainland recently and asked him to prepare a special dinner paired with wines that same night as a birthday surprise for actor Laurence Fishburne, who was celebrating there. "At least his reservation wasn't 'till 9 p.m., so I had some time," said Andrew, who prepared a seven-course feast for a star. Also on Lanai was James Worthy, the former L.A. Lakers basketball star ...

People may enter a drawing at Palomino to win a dinner party for 10 in their home, prepared by Chef Fred DeAngelo, who will be in the kitchen. Deadline is Oct. 19. Palomino and DeAngelo, a Kamehameha graduate, are featuring local products through Oct. 19. DeAngelo has a segment on KITV's "Good Morning Hawaii" on Friday mornings at 6:45 entitled "Chef Fred's Table" ...
