Aloha Festivals Begin

The Royal Court arrives for the Aloha Festivals opening ceremonies,
held at noon yesterday at Iolani Palace. The 53rd annual Floral Parade
wound through Waikiki today; tomorrow, Haleiwa
celebrates its Ohana Day.



Oahu’s princess
leads her pa‘u unit

Bernall Telefoni represented the Island of Oahu in this
morning's Floral Parade. Each of the nine mounted pa'u units
representing the eight major islands plus Molokini atoll was
led by a princess outfitted in the colors of her island. Aunty
Dora Martinez, the last of the original airport lei vendors,
served as grand marshal. Special guests from Vancouver,
Japan and the mainland participated in the four-
hour parade through Waikiki.



Parade Sweepstakes Winner

The Honolulu Korean Junior Chamber wins the Grand Sweepstakes
Award and the Director's Award for its float in today's Aloha Festivals
Floral Parade. Besides flowery floats, the parade features
pa'u riders, hula halau, clowns and bands.
